Museum of the Costa Grande

The Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande is a museum that houses vestiges and information about more than 50 archaeological sites discovered in the region of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo.

In the museum you will find 6 main rooms where you will see pre-Hispanic pieces from different cultures such as the Olmec, Tarascan, Teotihuacan and Mexica.

Here you will find pieces such as utensils, weapons and ceramic items as well as shells that were considered precious stones.

History

In the center of the town of Zihuatanejo, on Paseo del Pescador and Plaza Olof Palme, a simple one-story building was built in 1947, with stone columns and sloping tile-covered roofs, with six exhibition halls displaying pieces from different archaeological zones of the region, testimony of the evolution of the peoples settled in the state. Ceramics, clay figurines, obsidian instruments and weapons with marked influence of the Olmec, Teotihuacan, Mexica and Tarascan cultures stand out here, as well as the main historical events that took place in the Costa Grande, which stretches from the port of Acapulco to the mouth of the Balsas River.
